I think most of us brace ourselves for disappointment whenever our beloved books hit the silver screen. I wasn’t any different when I sat down to watch the movie adaptation of my favourite young adult book ever, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” But man, was I surprised. Let's just say this film tunnel-visioned its way into my heart and made me feel, in Charlie’s words, “infinite”. And a big reason behind its marvel is that the author, Stephen Chbosky, is also the movie’s director. Even if you haven’t read the book, I truly think everyone should watch this movie at least once in their lifetime.
Picture this in your head: A typical 1990s high school setting and an awkward and underconfident freshman navigating his way through the halls. Then enters two seniors who welcome him into their group and lo and behold, sparks fly. The story is about the unlikely friendship of Charlie who becomes a part of Sam and Patrick’s lives and their connection blossoms into a beautiful experience.
These characters are incredibly raw and the splendid portrayal by the cast just adds to its magic. The way they embody these characters and bring them to life is honestly brilliant. Charlie, an endearing observer, slowly starts to find his place in the world through his experiences. The fierce and independent Sam discovers her vulnerabilities and makes peace with them. And lastly, Patrick, who is brutally honest, openly queer and full of life, deals with his own conflicts.
The movie doesn't shy away from the messy realities of adolescence. Charlie had his fair share of trauma that he had to deal with. Throughout the movie, the characters deal with heartbreak, conflicts with friendships, sexuality and career choices. They are all about discovering themselves and their purpose. In between these scenes lie frames of chaos and calm filled with shared laughter, happiness, music and so much more.
The tunnel scene especially is pure cinematic gold.
"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" doesn't sugarcoat the teenage experience. This is one of the biggest reasons why I consider it to be one of the best coming-of-age films ever made. It is an open and honest love letter to friendship, love and self-discovery. And on top of that, the movie’s soundtrack is top-tier. If you are a fan of 90s rock, you will love it all the more. So, if you're looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and remember the bittersweet memories of growing up, look no further. This is the movie for you.
