“I have spent a long time in the dark searching for answers to what I want and who I am. I call this artwork Indigo.”
RM describes his first solo album as “the last archive of my twenties”. It is an attempt to document his life at 29, a recollection of his honest thoughts and feelings.
I first discovered BTS when I was 16. I was everything a teenager typically was— anxious, excited and always willing to discover new fixations. But my love wasn’t just a teenage phase. I’m 23 now. It’s been years and my love for them has only grown with time.
Watching the members release solo projects one by one and witnessing their artistic group, both as a group and as individual artists has been a sheer delight. It’s truly undeniable that what I feel for them is something truly special. But if I had to pick one album of theirs that truly changed me as a person, I’d pick RM’s Indigo.
Released in December of 2022, this album comprises 10 tracks that dabble across various genres and includes features from an array of spectacular artists like Erykah Badu, Anderson Paak, Mahalia, Paul Blanco, Tablo of Epik High and many more.
Beyond the technicalities of lyricism and beats, this album is like a support system for me. I’m closer to RM’s age now than I was at the time I first discovered him. And his raw honesty about his struggles in his 20s gives me hope.
My personal favourite track on the album is Closer. The beautiful lyrics and soothing vocals make it one of my top songs ever. The song handles the feelings of unreciprocated love in the gentlest way possible. Oh, to just admire somebody and watch them grow as a person even if you cannot be anything more in their journey— the way Paul Blanco sings in the bridge is divine.
And here's to Indigo, an album that transcends language and genre. It's a testament to RM's artistry, a gift from Kim Namjoon to us, ARMYs, and a source of comfort that I wouldn't trade for the world. It feels like a warm embrace that I would never want to escape from.
So, what’s your favourite track from Indigo?
